Choosing Your First 1911
A short guide to understanding commander vs government sizes, steel vs alloy frames, and the match-grade trade-off.
Size before finish
Before you decide on Cerakote color or grip material, decide how you plan to carry. A 5" Government will shoot softer and hold more rounds, but it hides harder. A 4.25" Commander splits the difference and is what most carry users land on.
Steel vs alloy
Steel frames feel better to a trained hand and soak up recoil, but weigh 10–12 oz more than an aluminum frame. For all-day concealment, alloy wins. For duty and range work, steel wins.
Match-grade is not always the answer
A tuned match 1911 does things cheaper pistols cannot. It also rewards maintenance more demandingly. If you will not clean and lube every 500 rounds, buy something more forgiving.
